In health care, keeping standards of care high is what protects the public. For registered nurses in California, staying competent is a condition of licence renewal; for the care and support roles around them, holding a valid first-aid and CPR certificate is a condition of the job. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

The California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) makes maintaining competence a condition of practice: it sets the requirements a nurse must meet to renew a licence and to keep skills current across a career. The goal is to protect the public by ensuring that nurses stay abreast of clinical advances relevant to their practice.
Beyond the Board's rules, the nursing standard of care carries a professional duty to maintain competence and to be able to respond in an emergency — including initiating resuscitation. A recognized, documented certificate is the practical way to evidence that a nurse can act when seconds matter.
The BRN requires 30 contact hours per two-year renewal from approved continuing-education providers. Note that basic CPR/BLS courses do not count toward these contact hours, so continuing education must be built from activities that meet the Board's criteria.

California regulation is more specific for support staff. A Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE) must keep a CPR-certified staff member on site at all times, and first-aid certification is required for care staff; Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) training itself embeds Basic Life Support. Where the role requires a valid first-aid and CPR certificate in addition to occupational training, a recognized standalone certificate meets that requirement — and must be kept current and verifiable.
