What First Aid & CPR California requires
Under California EMSA childcare training requirements; California Health and Safety Code, administered by California Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA), childcare providers must maintain current first aid and CPR certification that covers infant, child, and adult techniques.
The key requirements are:
- Training duration: A minimum of 16 hours of instruction, including pediatric CPR and first aid.
- Certification renewal: Every 2 years. Your certification must remain current throughout your employment.
- Timing: Certification is required before beginning work with children.
- On-site coverage: At least 1 certified staff member must be present at all times when children are in care — including during outdoor activities, field trips, and transportation.
